Perio - “What to Expect After Periodontal Surgery”

  • Avoid eating berried fruits, nuts and sharp foods such as chips, pizza crusts, or anything that could potentially become trapped in the grafted area or cut through stitches
  • Avoid biting directly into anything, especially fruits and sandwiches. Cut foods into smaller pieces and chew on the opposite side from the surgery site
  • Some swelling is to be expected. This is a normal occurrence and is due to the fluid accumulation in the surgical site.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Do leave the site alone
  • Don’t spit
  • Don’t suck on candies or through a straw
  • Do limit yourself to calm activities and elevate your head with pillow when you lie down to reduce bleeding
  • No smoking for 24 hours

When to call us: Heavy or increased bleeding. Pain or swelling that increases or continues beyond three days. Fever after 72 hours. A bad taste or odor in your mouth. A reaction to the medication.
